“Coco” won the Academy Award for best animated film on Sunday, March 4 — a strong ending for one of Pixar’s best films, that had seemed cursed from the beginning. The film by “Toy Story 3” director Lee Unkrich began in 2013 with an epic bonehead move, as Disney tried to trademark the name “Dia de los Muertos,” then spent the next five years apologizing. On the week of the movie’s release, Pixar creative head John Lasseter stepped down, admitting “missteps” involving unwanted contact with employees. To top it off, Unkrich developed a raging cold this week, tweeting about fears that he might not make it through his speech without a mucus-related disaster.
