SACRAMENTO — Joseph James DeAngelo, the man authorities say is the Golden State Killer who murdered 12 people and raped 45, is scheduled to stand before a judge in a Sacramento courthouse Friday to face charges in the decades-old crime spree. Police arrested DeAngelo, 72, on suspicion of two counts of murder stemming from the shooting deaths of a young couple near their Rancho Cordova home in 1978 as they walked their dog. He is being held without bail at Sacramento County Jail. Prosecutors in several other counties said they plan to file murder, rape, robbery and other charges that had been attributed to the East Area Rapist, Golden State Killer and the Original Nightstalker.
