A male fetus with an umbilical cord still attached was found dead Tuesday afternoon along the Berkeley shoreline, authorities said. The fetus was found at 2:39 p.m. by a person walking west of the shoreline at the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex, said Sgt. Andrew Frankel, a spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department. Both police and fire officials responded to the scene and discovered a “fairly well developed fetus with the umbilical cord still attached,” Frankel said. It appears that the male fetus washed up on shore, he added. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Coroner Office recovered the fetus and is investigating the incident.
