Man beaten with bike lock while lying on SF sidewalk

A 55-year-old man suffered critical injuries Tuesday after he was beaten with a bike lock while lying on the ground in San Francisco, authorities said. The assault occurred just before 6 a.m. on the 4000 block of California Street, a residential area, said Officer Robert Rueca, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department. The victim was reportedly lying on the sidewalk when another man suddenly struck him with a bicycle lock. The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. An unknown suspect fled the scene and no arrests have been made. The circumstances leading up to the assault were not immediately known.
