PHOENIX — Former President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush were the first couple at Houston Astros games. They sat up front, behind the plate. Mrs. Bush, who died Tuesday at 92, kept score. She and her husband frequently appeared on the scoreboard kiss cam. The Bushes took interest in their Astros. Among them for his first five big-league seasons was Hunter Pence. “She told me she liked how I wore my socks,” Pence said Wednesday, adding that the Bushes occasionally asked Pence and other players to lunch, along with then-owner Drayton McLane. Politics was not on the lunch menu. They talked a lot of baseball. Pence asked the Bushes which books they liked.
