BART police arrested 40 percent more people last year as they confronted a jump in cell phone thefts and other crimes in stations and aboard trains that prompted heavy criticism from riders, officials said. Figures released Tuesday by the transit agency showed a 24 percent increase in violent crime systemwide in 2017, with 347 cases reported, compared to 279 the year before. That number was largely driven by thefts of phones, laptops and other electronic devices, which shot up 52 percent, officials said. Overall, 417 “electronic thefts” were reported in 2017, up from 274 in 2016.
